Journal
A wallet, deal and reconciliation platform for Bureau de Change (BDC) operators, rebuilt from a system that BDC operators already run their daily operations on.
Journal is in testing ahead of release. It rebuilds the operations platform our founder built for Bureau de Change operators in 2021, which is still in daily use. Screenshots show Journal with test data.
In 2021, before Clywell was founded, Sodiq Olalekan built a custom operations platform for Bureau de Change operators to replace spreadsheet-heavy workflows. It has been in daily use at BDCs ever since, and Clywell now supports it. Journal is its rebuild: the same understanding of how a BDC actually works, with a clearer interface, built as one of the core applications in the Clywell platform suite. Development is largely complete, and Journal is now in testing.
The challenge
BDC operators often rely on manual processes and spreadsheets to manage daily transactions and financial records. These workflows make records difficult to maintain, reconcile, audit and review. Generic accounting software does not fit either: it has no notion of customer wallets held in several currencies, deals funded in cash or by transfer, or the approvals a BDC needs before money moves.
What we built
The original platform, built with .NET and deployed with Docker, gave the operators structured transaction recording, reconciliation support, operator reporting and role-based access. Journal rebuilds that as part of the Clywell platform suite, with a Next.js frontend, .NET services and PostgreSQL, run in Docker and orchestrated in development with .NET Aspire. It is organised around the way operators work day to day: customer wallets across naira, dollars, pounds and euros; BDC deals recorded with how the customer paid; transfers, expenses and currency swaps; an approvals queue; and exports for accounting. The dashboard shows balances held across all active wallets and the activity for any period, so an operator can see the state of the business at a glance.
The outcome
The original platform is in live use at BDC operations, supporting daily transaction and record management. Running it taught us where operators lose time, and Journal is built around those lessons. It shows how Clywell works: we build software for a specific business, keep it running, and keep improving it.
